Julie Craig and Cody

When Lucky Cody Craig earned the National Association of Canine Scent Work's Elite Champion Title on January 5, 2019, Julie Craig, DMKC member and Cody's owner/handler, reported that he was the 97th dog out of over 19,500 registered scent work dogs in the United States and 5 Canadian provinces to earn it.

According to additional NACSW reported data at that time, there were 241 different breeds registered, with the top breeds registered being German Shepherd Dog, Labrador Retriever and Border Collie. Cody was then, and still is, the only Bichon Frise to earn this title. The Bichon Frise Reporter is an AKC owner/handler quarterly publication. Julie and her husband Tom, also a DMKC member, are extremely grateful that Heidi Kausch, Publisher/Editor, and Jean Fergus, Managing Editor/Production, of The Bichon Frise Reporter have featured Cody on their magazine cover, as he proudly poses with his beautiful National Association of Canine Scent Work "Elite Champion Title" ribbon.

Cody to the Beach

Here is one of Cody's prop tricks at the Performer level, the 4th of 5 levels he completed to earn the Trick Dog Elite Performer Title. Cody performed 47 tricks in all to earn this title. This is a screen grab from the video we submitted. Cody, aka Tiki Dude, had to pull an object, his wagon, a minimum of 10' within the context of a themed prop. In his little wagon, he has his surfboard, beach toys, a bucket and shovel and his Bichon Frise toy puppy friend. The music we played in the background to accompany the video was the Beach Boys' "Surfin' USA." Cody's father's name was "CH Prancing Murf the Surf," so this was a tribute to his father.
